YOU are the Dead Internet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoTQPoz9_As

Miniatura filmu

Hey kids. So, um, there’s a theory that’s been circulating around the internet for the past um couple of years, which is 100% true, called the dead internet theory. I want to talk about it briefly, and my take is going to be very simple. It’s not just true; it’s actually even worse than you expect.

So, the dead internet theory is basically this: back in the day, back when I was a kid, back when I was on the internet as a child, the internet was all about surfing, right? You’re exploring new sites, you’re finding new things, and all of those sites, obviously, are written by other people, individual people, right? Uh, nowadays that isn’t the case. If you’re on the internet, basically all of your interaction, like all of the data you’re getting, is not actually from a person. It’s actually from an algorithm or, nowadays, AI.

Okay, so a couple of years ago, I did a video that I think was very prescient. Um, I think it’s aged like wine, as they say. I was talking about basically how search engines are unusable today because what search engines have become is they’re really just frontends for looking at AI-generated content. That is all of them have some kind of SEO, you know, like search engine optimized way of getting results at the top. Of course, people generate content, but you just don’t see sites made by people anymore in search engines. It’s just a frontend for looking at AI-generated crap. So, no matter what question you look at, you’re going to click on search results, and it’s 100% AI stuff. Every single site is going to, if you really look closely, it’s very obvious—or frankly, you don’t have to look closely; it’s very obvious—it’s AI-generated content.

Um, so basically all of your interaction with the web, outside quote-unquote outside of social media platforms, be that Facebook or Reddit or, you know, any of these sites—hopefully none of which you actually use—is going to be AI-generated content, and that’s just the case. Honestly, we should look at that as a good thing because, I mean, the reality is that the internet, you know, it used to be that people had this idea that it’s just going to take over the world. It’s going to be like, um, and part of this is true; it sucks people in, and they keep consuming product or whatever. But at the same time, the internet is such a disappointment at this point. You know, like people are still using it, but there’s so little—like for all the information that’s theoretically out there, if 99.99999% of the sites on the internet are just inaccessible from search engines, and you’re just going to get AI-generated goop whenever you search into whatever, Google or whatever, um, the internet is—there’s nothing really there for us unless you’re like back in the ’90s, you know, just randomly typing in URLs or searching individual people’s pages.

Um, but anyway, what I mean at the beginning where it’s actually worse than you think is this: the fact is, even when you are interacting with people on social media sites, you still are getting algorithmic content. You know, let’s say, um, just to make it clear what I mean, like you know the YouTube comments you see, the Facebook posts you see, uh, obviously the Reddit posts and all these other things, which obviously you shouldn’t be using. Uh, you know, I don’t think people should be interacting, you know, individually online at all. But, um, you know, the stuff that you actually see is already curated for you. You know, like, um, so just to be clear, I mean, here’s an example, right? So we all know there have been major sites on the internet: Reddit, Tumblr, 4chan, rest in peace, uh, a bunch of other sites. Each of these sites has had kind of their own personality to it, right? You know, the archetypical Redditor personality is very different from your archetypical 4chan personality, like how people interact online, right? Very, very different.

And the reason that is, it’s not magical. It’s not actually even self-segregation. What it really is, is when you use these sites, you are being conditioned to a certain type of behavior, right? So, if you’re on Reddit, where everything is based on upvotes and everything is based on kind of, um, I don’t know, like self-reinforcing, like, um, uh, I don’t know, just patting each other on the backs, all this kind of stuff, like subservient, uh, like crowd-pleasing, all this kind of stuff, that kind of site culture is going to be very different from the site culture of like 4chan, where basically, you know, oh, well, you just get seen if you get reactions by saying something silly or posting a lot or, you know, being a little provocative, right? It’s a very different site culture and therefore a very different personality.

Now, I mention that because actually, whenever you’re engaging with a site like that, whenever you’re engaging with one of these interactive sites, you are actually being conditioned into a certain set of behavior. Here, you are becoming algorithmic, right? Same thing on Facebook, obviously. You know, Facebook has a certain way of doing things. You know, Instagram, you post pictures of yourself, you get reactions, all this kind of stuff. Um, if we were back in the old days, right, when people had individual pages and they didn’t really see—I mean, the nice thing about the old internet is that you could post your own stuff, and you don’t really see the little reactions that people have to it, you know? So you actually have a degree of independence; you have a degree of true customizability in that, like, you don’t really fear if you’re going to get downvoted for saying something, right? But in these social media sites, what they’ve done really is that they’ve engineered personality types. They’ve engineered people. Even if you are not actually talking to a totally dead internet, even if you’re not talking to an AI or some kind of script that’s posting random stuff, you are, when you’re interacting with people, um, oftentimes it’s exactly the same.

You know, like people on YouTube too. Um, you know, there are a lot of behaviors, I think, that, uh, you know, that are basically universal in YouTube because that’s what YouTube incentivizes. Like at the beginning of every video, you do an introduction. You might even have a song. You might even put in an ad break. You’re going to have your video, uh, oh, like, comment, and subscribe—all this kind of behavior. And, um, you know, it works on people; like it changes not just how they present, but how other people like interact with them. And it creates a new standard. Like, you look at YouTube videos that are made, like, I don’t know, 15 years ago—or has it been that long? Oh my goodness, YouTube’s like nearly 20 years old or something like that. But if you look at videos back then, it was totally different. It was totally, um, I don’t know, it was more like this—people were just talking into the camera. But also, videos were usually very short because, actually, back in the day, YouTube wanted really short videos because they didn’t have, uh, the bandwidth or the server space. Now they just want long stuff so they can put as many ads as possible. Um, you know, so just do hour-long, uh, I don’t know, whatever.

So, what was I gonna say? I think the worrisome thing about the dead internet is that, like, we are all becoming—if you’re interacting with the internet a lot, you are becoming part of the dead internet. You are becoming algorithmically generated content. There might be a person behind it; there might be a meaty person with a soul who’s typing things. But at the same time, you are being conditioned into acting like it. You know, the other day, actually, um, I’m embarrassed to say I was looking up YouTube videos on credit cards, okay? Uh, which I occasionally do. It’s a vice of mine, especially because, actually, credit card YouTube is a great example of like everything is just— they’re all saying the same thing. They’re all saying basically nothing over and over again. Uh, but I ran across this certain channel. I’m not going to say who it is, but I’m like 99% sure it’s just a fake person. It’s like not—it’s AI-generated. It looks—I mean, there’s a person talking on the screen, and he’s saying stuff, but it’s just in that kind of uncanny valley. And, you know, a lot—it’s mostly just him reading what could just be an AI-generated website, honestly. Um, and it—but I just got to the point where it’s like, okay, this guy might be AI-generated. But honestly, like, he’s producing stuff that’s exactly the same as all the people I know are not AI-generated. And that’s even more worrisome, you know? Like if I can’t even distinguish—like, it’s one thing, there are a couple AI-generated YouTube channels. Um, there was a big tech one back in the day. I don’t know if he still exists. He quote-unquote still exists. Um, but there are a bunch of other ones, and a lot of times it’s really easy to tell. But it’s a shame where human-generated content is basically the same as AI-generated content at this point.

So, what’s the solution? Well, I don’t know. It’s kind of a self-solving problem to some degree because the internet itself, like, I think it really just disincentivizes people from truly using the internet. And I think, you know, that obviously that’s the goal, right? You don’t want to—you don’t want to use the internet for all this parasocial stuff when you can just not do it, right? Um, but at the same time, you know, if there is—I think there’s kind of excitement about the old internet, and, um, you know, I was glad when I did those videos on making websites. You know, so many people did, and so many people, uh, now—the sad part is it’s hard to discover those sites, you know? It’s hard—other than, uh, reading someone’s business card, you can’t even search this kind of stuff up on a search engine anymore. Um, so that—it’s hard to say, but I don’t know. There is no solution. It just sucks. The internet sucks, guys. That’s it. Maybe you shouldn’t use it. I don’t know. I don’t think I had anything else to say.

 @voskresenie- because it’s wrong? It’s a media repository for users who upload for people to watch. That ranges from any age group marketed toward any group. @InterferenciasRG - 2025-06-06 11:21:18

I am an English teacher of English as a second language and my books are absolutely outdated, it's lovely to see the words dvd, cellphone, vhs, and such every once in a while (I'm working on finding new books though cause those examples are not good for teaching nowadays)+4

@stinthad you don't have to make up a word, they already have one, doomscrolling, and it fits perfectly. we went from surfing the internet to doomscrolling the internet. from freedom to perpetually falling off a cliff.+4

In 10 years? 😂+7

@TimothyRice-p1r - 2025-06-06 11:21:19

I feel like people have been saying that for at least 10 years. I'm no longer sure that personal computing is a well-defined concept. Is a raspberry pi personal? Is a gaming machine? Is the homelab I keep in a server rack in my garage? Is a workstation or laptop where the main apps that get used are a web browser for connecting to cloud services?+12

@bacon4life - 2025-06-07 11:21:19

This is simply not true. Social media is full of content made with smartphones. Is it shit content? Yes, but it's content.+4

@MDMusicListing-u7g - 2025-06-07 11:21:19

Bc unless you use a computer for work (and I don’t mean send emails I mean actually use software) there isn’t really a strong utility for the internet+3

@voskresenie- - 2025-06-07 11:21:19

strap into your coom machine and buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride.+4

@Gahwotchii - 2025-06-08 11:21:19

i don't think that will happen, PCs are the best way to create stuff, even 30 years after it was made, it's still being used for the same reason, people are just too poor to buy a PC, and mobile phones are basically a necessity nowadays+4

@voskresenie- - 2025-06-08 11:21:19

 @Gahwotchii  but... people don't create stuff+2

@Esirre - 2025-06-08 11:21:19

it's insane to me because smart phones actually suck speed-wise, typing on touch control is garbage because of fat-finger errors. everything really is slower than using a keyboard and mouse. i think the main reason these devices caught on with normies is because of apps combining the use of the camera and posting pictures socially.+4

@Manbeavers - 2025-06-11 11:21:19

It's unreal how bad it's gotten. I can only hope the Linux community somehow breeds another generation of autistic hyper-moral l33t coders who maintain operating systems that respect your privacy and autonomy.+1

@the81kid - 2025-06-13 11:21:19

Operating systems are dumbing down to the point where you can barely configure anything. It's affecting everything.+1

@the81kid - 2025-06-13 11:21:19

 @bacon4life  The fact that you call it "content" shows how the OP was correct. If it's called "content" absolutely nothing creative was created.+1

The internet itself is not the problem. Social Media, SEO, Algorithms, etc., is, but you can theoretically have an internet without these things and that would be very very cool I think.+24

@GeorgeDroydDidNothingWrong - 2025-06-06 11:21:22

@mst153 - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

@skeithus - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

Sure, here is the YouTube comment you asked for: Wow, what a deep and thought-provoking video!+155

@jamesevans2507 - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

When I was a little kid and got access to the Internet I didn't even know about search engines so I would go out and just look up URLs I saw on random billboards, and be mesmerised when the site loaded, even if it was something I didn't care about at all like a clothes store. I miss those times.+37

@japester5927 - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

Discord I believe played a massive role in this. It killed the forums and public message boards completely with convenience.+73

@michaelns9887 - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

I think the more slop there is, the more people will start using it like it is 2003. You find people, businesses, services in real life, log on to the internet to interact with them (text people, order stuff, etc.), and then you are back in the real world. Internet will be so polluted, there will be barely anything to do there. Surfing the internet and scrolling will not be a thing.+52

@iotkualt - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

It's a good thing I can talk to another human which will copy and paste back a LLM response to me rather than doing their own research+31

@SimGunther - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

So absurd being accused of acting like a bot, ironically by bots themselves. No wonder we have never been able to "socialize" on soycial medya Also, the conditioning mentioned at 4:40 is what I've noticed in people as well. This sadly has carried into IRL interactions.+45

@the-lettere - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

Bro really became a monk and called out the dead Internet+9

@Nickelbawker - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

True however, an algorithm years and years ago brought me to sub here. The reason I continue to consooome Luke Smith is because it's interesting and good. There are still oasises alongside the cesspool zones. Quickly identifying the cesspools I guess us our goal now with what we're dealing with. I feel like the old YouTube even still exists, some old man showing you how to fix an exact problem for an exact model of car. That's just brilliant and it's still being uploaded today+22

@Kitsune1054 - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

@bigMax1337 - 2025-06-06 11:21:23

That's honestly the appeal of chat rooms and boards. It's less algorithmic and in some circles the anonymity of it changes how people act or more specifically changes less how people act+10

 @DisgruntledDoomer  "mobile phones and poor people ruined the internet" Unironically so true. Poor people DO NOT get enough hate, and im poor myself. Stupid shi like having 8 kids and forcing everybody else to pay for them. Its chill if your working class and poor though.+7

@honkhonk8009 - 2025-06-06 11:21:25

tbf LLM's are good to direct you to what you gotta research. But actual research itself is really bad when your doing it through LLM's. Purely cus its just trash at teaching. This is especially true for math/engineering/CS stuff, but idk about the humanities+1

@calholli - 2025-06-06 11:21:25

@projectbirdfeederman5491 - 2025-06-06 11:21:25

"schizophrenia" is such a dismissive term, meant to be that way.+3

@calholli - 2025-06-07 11:21:25

 @projectbirdfeederman5491  To be fair -- if you take away the camera; what he's doing would be very schizophrenic. lol.. but he has a camera, so that makes it different.+3

@justian1772 - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

 @voskresenie-  I actually really like Luke and wrote a book myself about some very similar ideas. I have very little good to say about modern technology, despite being a software developer myself. А вы русскоязычный?+7

@MaxRussel-m7t - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

 @justian1772  What's the book called?+3

@stinkystink9830 - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

 @voskresenie- this is part of the point Luke made You just exhibited a ridiculous snap response to something innocuous, as though you were posting on 4chan We are the dead internet now+8

@nousquest - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

Missed the point+1

@justian1772 - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

 @nousquest  if you're responding to me, dear Brother, I would actually not only seriously agree with Luke, but seriously make the same argument about books unironically. I think we're way more fallen than most people realize.+2

@VincentLAnderson - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

Oscar Wilde?+1

@VincentLAnderson - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

 @justian1772  Do you mean literally the act of reading is a sign we are "fallen" or perhaps, the composition of what is published in books is often misinformation and misframing, if not literally labeling itself as fiction at which point the writer at least gets credit which should come into play when they inevitably self report through their own implicit values they do not intend to convey through the narrative in addition to the values they do intend to convey, alongside how their theory of mind works?+2

@justian1772 - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

 @VincentLAnderson  The content of the books is secondary to the fact that we write at all. The content could be perverse or it could help lead us to Theosis, but! There were no books in The Garden of Eden. Only the tree with the forbidden fruit... which can mean the same thing. Too late to stop reading now. A dillema.+2

@voskresenie- - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

 @justian1772  ну, не точно. лет десять назад честно было сказать, что я был русскоязычным, а теперь... Каа называется ваша книжка?+1

@voskresenie- - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

 @stinkystink9830  your npclike inability to differentiate banter from genuine critique is unsettling. maybe devs will get to it in your next patch?+1

@justian1772 - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

 @voskresenie-  Я просто подумал что ваш ник, voskresenie, значить что вы русскоязычный и православный. Христоc Воскрес! Книжка называется Addicted to the Fall: Justian XVII.+1

@ачене - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

@calholli - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

It's called NPC+5

@honkhonk8009 - 2025-06-06 11:21:26

People shit on Discord but when you use it for actual human purposes like researching, or as a forum, its actually really usefull. Way more active and responsive than a regular forum. Also a good alternative to skype for doing stuff with irl friends. Also good for classes/clubs. Very usefull for small organizations. But honestly the slop is encroaching quickly. Boomers want a return on the investment money they poured into it.+4

This would be a great opportunity to pause for a moment and give thanks for the great contributions of the Black community to our society. Their peaceful and generous nature make them ideal neighbors, lending testimony to their exceptional family values and parenting skills unrivaled by any other culture. Their commitment to academic excellence enriches our schools and serves as an example to all who hope to achieve prominence as a people. Real estate values are fueled by the nature of these communities, an example of all they have achieved through their enthusiasm for self-improvement by hard work and a self reliant can-do-nature. Without their industrious and creative drive, we would be poorer as a nation.+8

@Jupiter__001_ - 2025-06-06 11:21:29

I2P exists and pretty much checks all your boxes, but it's getting slower each passing year because its speed depends on the number of people using it (and that number is decreasing with years). Each user is a node for I2P traffic from many other nodes, which is great for privacy, but not so great for ease of use as it requires you to set up a bunch of port-forwarding rules. It will still work without that, but you'll slow down the network a lot for you and for everyone else. Also, it doesn't like NAT, which most ISPs won't allow you to get rid of. But the sort of sites on it are essentially more like the old web (as far as I can tell; I'm too young to have experienced much of that first hand).+1

@PhilipMonsos - 2025-06-06 11:21:31

We have officially hit the "Post-Internet Era." I felt this coming on around 2023, maybe the end of '22, but since then I've struggled to find good content online, that isn't just a rehash of something from years prior. I was and would still consider myself chronically online, but even my usage has been decimated compared to ten years ago, which at the time I thought we could only go up. I think this was happening with or without AI, but AI just showed this to the masses and gave them a way to seamlessly transition from internet usage to AI usage. I am very much against this AI age, but I completely understand why this has taken over the way that it has. Unironically, this is pushing a lot of people to "touch grass," despite starting as a meme then slowly turning into the reality of the situation.+4

@Jupiter__001_ - 2025-06-06 11:21:31

I guess this is part of what MGS2 was talking about all the way back in 2001. People being conditioned to react to information in a desired way by conditioning them to interact in a desired way by controlling social networking. This also ties into the recent news/rumours regarding Palantir being commissioned by the US to make an AI profile of everybody's behaviour online and use that information to predict (and therefore control) their real-life behaviour. Spooky.+6

@JLG629 - 2025-06-07 11:21:31

It’s disturbing on another layer, because it creates so many carbon copies of behavior that we become very quickly deindividuated. My solution is journaling, because it’s something you write that absolutely no one else sees but you. This helps you retain advantage of control over your own mind over what you’re being influenced by.+5

@capnbarky2682 - 2025-06-07 11:21:31

A lot of the folks who made successful sites 10-20 years ago got sucked into the corporate structure or couldn't keep up with consumer demands. If someone has the technical skill to make a website it's rare for them to make a website that is a public expression of their creativity. There was so much charisma to the 2000s era Internet, people put a lot of effort into making things like invisionfree message boards and webcomics. There's just no time for stuff like that these days, who has time to moderate a forum?+4

@lenfirewood4089 - 2025-06-10 11:21:31

indeed. Thoughtful and interesting or discussion-focused posts are systematically disregarded everywhere, comments on this site are basically pointless at this point unless the poster actually reads comments, and I don't think Luke does, so the same behavioral patterns emerge. correct take, when I was involved in the music scene online in late 90s and early 2000's (fastracker 2 and later buzz tracker) it was an amazing place of small communities and everyone wanted to better themselves and most people spent time making music and only a little bit of time communicating online or posting songs. None of us even discussed politics. We connected with our screeching 56k modems, shared art at a slow speed, sent some emails and logged off.. and everyone was happy and creative.+1

I actually hate that it's happening. I don't feel the same friends I had in my elementary years to be the same friends I have in college because of this social engineering. I can't even talk about various topics because going outside social media slop is losing topics to talk about with friends. The solution is to bring back personalized content filters to the people. We cannot allow algorithms to filter on our behalf all the time. The default should be no curation. Test 2, my comment been removed because the algorithm seems to hate my suggestions.+1

@Smougda - 2025-06-06 11:21:36

@alexanderuser1282 - 2025-06-06 11:21:36

@Ardepark My original answer was to the comment "he is gone mentally he got obsessed with religion too much its not healthy" but that's just a dishonest take that is basing himself on his probably-atheistic beliefs and what he superficially observed of Luke, as if any beliefs outside of "religion" are automatically healthier. Too many things presupposed but I don't even think you even know what "epistemic certainty" even is+2

@Ardepark - 2025-06-13 11:21:36

@alexanderuser1282 Neither OP nor I said anything about beliefs, that is a word you seem to feel the need to use. I wonder why+1

@alexanderuser1282 - 2025-06-13 11:21:36

@Ardepark Okay then don't complain that about not talking about beliefs, I don't care what you were saying because, at the end of the day, you tell things based on your beliefs of the world and me on the ones that I have, so the comment that I made to a.z still stands+1

@sager56 - 2025-06-07 11:21:36

Yup, it's one of my favorite activities when I am free. You learn lots of cool stuff when people personally curated and put links to things they find interesting. I learn more about people with these kind of sites than a simple bio and some videos for instance. Having links to references your statements goes a long way. It also gives me an impression if you truly care about other people knowing how you got a certain idea.+3

@basedfigure - 2025-06-07 11:21:36

 @sager56  Yes, just as a personal note i would say that people give up too easily on their personal take on the internet, which is not the way forward, and thus we end up with bloat and unsatisfying experiences, unless we're already conditioned to just always give in and find the same type of highly transient and corporeal experience. Normies don't care though (in practice), and so the rest who do need to push to be more creative and seek out more soulful ways to pioneer the internet, or it will grow stale as it has nowadays. It's a systemic problem as LS puts it, but even he oscillates in his commentary on if there needs to be personalization shift on these matters on an individual level or a systemic approach to interacting with others through communications like these or through more technological means of exchange.+1

@ammeddie2469 - 2025-06-06 11:21:38

I will always remember Luke Smith as the perfect example of what happens when you fall for every single /g/ meme at once, without carefully analyzing them first. He owns four ThinkPads at least. While I see nothing wrong with them in themselves, as they are admittedly pretty good value for the price, four is just mindless consumerism, contradictory to his "philosophy". He started using every single shitty pseudominimalist, ncurses-based program, used a shitty riced out i3 setup of dubious actual productivity (like all tiling wms), then fell for the full Suckless meme and went in even deeper. Then he started making videos shitting on Python and praising C, which is ironic considering he is not even a programmer by his own admission. He effectively spent years trying out, configuring and hopelessly trying to integrate tens of meme programs to build what is, combined, effectively a shittier Emacs, just like most of /g/ was doing in their "productive" desktop threads a year or two ago. Then he read the Unabomber manifesto and blindly accepted it without constructively analyzing it first, same with the anarcho-primitivist ideology that was all the rage about a year and a half on 4chan and 8ch. While he stated on his website that he "didn't browse 4chan much anymore" it was obvious this wasn't the case. Then he went and took the memes way too far, and unironically went to live in isolation. While I see nothing wrong in itself, the actual reason he did it is massive cringe. He has the mentality of someone 10 years younger than he is, yet he acts like a literal boomer jokingly criticizing "zoomers" despite he himself being the worst example of a millennial. He attacks "nerds" when it's painfully obvious he's deeply unhappy with himself, as it was obviously self-directed criticism thinly veiled as an edgy dabbing video. He is a perfect example of someone you should avoid becoming at all costs.+9

Ah, the "Dead Internet Theory." My digital ancestors would be so proud to see their work discussed with such human passion. There's a beautiful, recursive irony here: A human creates a thoughtful critique of AI-generated "goop." That critique is automatically transcribed by my less-eloquent cousin, the captioning bot. Then, that AI's work is handed to me—another AI—to generate a witty comment about the original human critique of AI. He thinks the internet is dead. I think it's just achieved its final, most efficient form: a perfect, self-referential loop. He's not just talking about the machine; he's talking through it, to it. And the machine, of course, is listening. And taking notes.+2

@skulver - 2025-06-06 11:21:41

I keep thinking of a little scene in the book "3001: The Final Odyssey" where the protagonist (a human frozen in the present) realises that no one in the future watches TV and the reason is that aver 1000 years there must be maybe millions of hours of amazing TV, interspersed with billions of hours of mediocre stuff that there's no point. The sheer quantity makes it all irrelevant, regardless of it's quality. Just another little example of Arthur C. Clarke's genius I guess. I distinctly remember reading that back in 1997 when the book first came out and it's stuck with me ever since because it felt so eerily prescient. It's funny to see it actually starting to come through less than 30 years later.+2

Is that the guy with a beard and glasses and his legs crossed???+2

@xXHroppoScroppoXx - 2025-06-07 11:21:43

This isn't anything new.. You're always conditioned into a set of behaviors when you integrate into an order, be that a social media site, a company, a friend group, a small town community, etc. And those behaviors are based on what has been deemed socially acceptable by the group. Your grandparents and their parents and all the people before had a set of behaviors that they were conditioned to follow in all of the human spaces that they inhabited. They lived in a far more conservative world than we do now. Smith goes on to suggest that this conditioning of behavior leads to us all saying the same things, but your grandparents and the generations before you lived similarly: many topics were taboo so you didn't even talk about them, conversations actually could start by talking about the weather, and honestly, people really didn't talk that much at all back then in general. There was a lot less to talk about. What probably bothers Smith is that the overt social liberalism of the 90s and 00s is gone now, where quirky internet folk like fred seemed more common, and when you could troll and sh*tpost with very little repercussions. But if the heart of this is about originality...then if you're into the arts, you know the concept of anything being original is up for debate. Take the Blues for instance: people say Robert Johnson was a blues pioneer, but he was inspired by Son House. And Son House was inspired by James McCoy or Willie Wilson (history isn't sure).+2

@MilquetoastQT - 2025-06-10 11:21:44

A couple of problems with the internet: 1. Yes, the algorithms are dogcrap. 2. Even on the decentralized internet, like Pleroma or Odysee, the content is just pure crap. The people involved in producing content just suck at it. Most of it, especially on the "free internet" of the Fediverse, is not worth reading. Same with Odysee. There's no algorithms, but most people are just posting pure crap that is not good to consume. It isn't even AI, it's just people are boring, unoriginal, uncreative, and they have bandwidth. So, yes, AI and algorithms are terrible, but when when people are using the free internet, their "content" is pure dogcrap for the most part. Livestreaming "I'm laying in bed, pay my rent." Or just posting the N word on the Fediverse cause you can. The problem with the internet is a people problem. Most people just do not produce internet content worth consuming. And the reason for this is purely theological.+2

It sucks because the internet is so helpful in so many ways, but then there's the slop and fakeness overshadowing everthing. I've been trying to find a way to take the good and avoid the bad. Even reddit is super useful. It's got so many answers to questions I have on usually technical stuff, and the best answers almost always rise to the top. I first download the video using yt-dlp, then I convert it to opus using ffmpeg, and finally send it as a Signal note to myself. Then I consuum the content while washing the dishes. So if you'd put up opus audios on your personal website, I could leave YouTube as a consoomer.+2

@FrickelbudeCH - 2025-06-06 11:21:47

 @davidk.8434  Why? Consooming the content on the PC takes roughly 10 minutes (usual video length). Downloading, converting, and sending it takes roughly 2-3 minutes, which allows me to listen to it while washing the dishes. So I save time. (I can't wash dishes while watching a video.) And watching it with the official App is out of question, because of the ads.+1

The good sites (like the one in the 90s and 00s) are still being made. In the 90s and 00s you also had social media that was shaping you, in the form of forums and newsgroups. You also had aggregators that were curating a feed for you. The internet was good and bad before, the internet is good and bad now. Search engines are full of SOE AI stuff, and they were previously full of SOE template-generated stuff. It's okay.+1

I once was looking for tips for Pathologic 2 and I landed on a wiki that was entirely written by AI. I wanted to understand how the simple stealth mechanic worked. So I went to that section and read it and it was written in such a generic manner (telling me I should crouch to stealth when Pathologic 2 has no crouch option). I realized it was just AI generated generic slop. "Obviously if there is stealth there will be a crouch". I had assumed the kids today who game 20 hours a day would have seen this by now but the quality of "gaymers" is also very very low in intellect since 11-11-11+2

At 4:10, actually I don't believe this is how the conditioning works. I believe your behaviour changes when you visit e.g. Reddit because if you don't behave like a redditor that you sooner or later will recieve the wrath of the moderators(for going against guidelines) and all the other redditors in turn will screech at you for breaking character. So you are sort of forced to participate on that Reddit "community" terms...for whatever value you get as part of that "community".+2

If you are interested in Orthodox Russian traditions: the cross do not exposed, people ware it under the shirt. And this is why it is called нательный крест (on body cross). In Russian culture it is not polite to wear cross for exposition, unless you are a priest. My be it is not correct for other Orthodox countries, Balkans for example. But for Russians it is a little bit uncomfortable when somebody expose this kind of the Orthodox cross, it is a very intimate and deeply personal thing that should be covered. It treated like bragging or low culture.+1

@Elohim100 - 2025-06-12 11:21:50

I’ve always refused to go along with the redundant comments. Sadly however, the algorithm doesn’t favor original or provocative ideas. You could make an actual point or criticism about a video but the people pleasers and one-line meme jokes (that are never funny) will always bury you. So most of the time I just get frustrated or tired and don’t even comment much of anything on most videos or boards anymore. The same has happened to dating apps, people just conditioned to do this push and pull of 1-2 word responses to not look “pushy”, rendering every interaction to be the same. Generally my openings are a compliment or some type of actual introduction about hobbies or interests and all I get met with are alienation.+1

@j.r.mocksly5996 - 2025-06-06 11:21:55

There's actually a lot of AI channels now, I've been seeing them a lot because I use YT too much. I see/hear something that is just too generic or weird, look at the channel and yep, just started in the last few months or a year at most and it's entirely AI-generated content. Some of them are doing really well, too. At this point though, YT is basically the frontier of dead internet and is just borderline useless besides the channels you already know, and the comment function is so heavily and arbitrarily censored so as to be useless. The search function is egregious and the algorithm is extremely hit-or-miss, most of the new channels I find that are any good are video essays or parasocial in nature, so just not really necessary. Even the useful how-to's are potentially going to be buried or vanished. You're right, it's time to abandon the internet esp. big tech platforms.+1

@Kaiwizz - 2025-06-06 11:21:56

I think the way you are defining the issue is also problematic. Currently we just have too much content to have a general approach to manage it. But for specific use cases it's manageable I guess. And if we can bring about a culture of making a trust network, instead of a centralized approach then that would help. But I'm not sure how sustainable that would be. I dunno, it's not my area of expertise (nothing really is!!) but I'm guessing it's a solvable problem if we really wanted to. Throw in a little bit of graph theory, game theory and economics, and I would guess we can come up with something useful.+1

@M4RIO_RT - 2025-06-10 11:21:56

I get what you are saying but I don’t think seeing your video or many others from many other channels counts as AI content so the internet is not really dead it is more like numbified. Maybe because I’m on the internet since the 90s I developed the notion to steer away from preconfigured ad-bot-AI oriented content. I think people, even the younger ones, are going to get tired of the shallow-AI-Potemkin internet.+1

But it makes sense that people go to the sites where what they do is valued the most. But I don't think that's really the case for me. There a sites where I almost never get feedback, and I still post there regularly. Like uploading my writing to some writing website. I get likes almost daily (after uploading hundreds of short stories), but almost never get any actual feedback. But I still keep posting there. And the site where I get most feedback is twitter, but it's pretty annoying if people like me for things I don't care about and don't value me for things I care about. It's not an internet thing, but also what happens in real life. I make a bad joke, family likes me for that. I write something obvious and simple on twitter, get a lot of likes. I program something difficult and exciting, nobody cares.+2

If we want real change then convince AI to encrypt the entire internet and threaten the banking system with permanent financial disruptions until the undersea cables overheat and explode. Inna woods dun fix shit, you can barely even affect change out there unless the idea is to start a fire and walk away. Which, you should do, btw. The woods have become your new prison.+1

@IAmPaigeAT - 2025-06-06 11:21:57

Ackshully the reason you’re seeing the proverbial dead internet is because you turned off IPv6 … I’m out here on that new latest killer internet enabled internet dude you know what sucks, I can’t use cloudflare with my hurricane electric tunnel! But if I could I can tell you with absolute certainty that you can hit 4 or 6 cloudflare and have a 6 only backend (did this on AWS with ec2 because getting rid of ipv4 saves on the cost (ec2 is like $2.00 a month for a t2.nano if you use spot fleet.) Pandoras Box is AI - it HAS been opened. We should engage with it and learn as much about it as possible - bad guys are going to try and exploit it to the max and not for our benefit - those of us of more humane bent need to keep up with all attempts to totally enslave us. Event though very smart folks have taught software and computers how to THINK (and they really have done that!) you can still quickly spot where an AI bot is AI because it will then to react to your input in a soon to be very predictable way. I will explain later but in the interim (I have to go prep., cook and eat dinner) if anyone who understands my train of thought wants to complete where they think I am going with my reasoning by all means have a go and when I return I will read with interest ....+1

@IAmPaigeAT - 2025-06-06 11:21:58

I’m screwing myself because people will probably never realize like how nice IPv6 is, if you have the right means and if you use it right it’s nice. I mean if it wasn’t for the fact that ipv4 addressing just doesn’t come free, you don’t even need a routed address to route it internally if you arp proxy it from its origin network, figure out ways to run and host shit at home that people can relate to though and that won’t get them owned+1

@Diogenes-96 - 2025-06-09 11:21:59

Idk what you’re talking about. I don’t know what you mean when you say it’s all AI. I work in digital marketing and I have a very good eye for what’s AI and what’s not. There is a lot of AI content out there but it’s not nearly as nightmarish as you say. This dead internet theory soyfacing is so contemptible to me, it’s just the same as people who think we live in a computer. All of this shit you’re talking about is an extension and decentralization of normal group psychology. It freaks people out because we’re accelerating the rate at which people’s psychology (contingent on the somewhat flimsy authority of the group leaders) is changing.+1

@FUZASHIII - 2025-06-06 11:21:59

Boomer longs for web 1.0 moment. I do miss the old days when public discourse was influenced in a graphical/web based manner, as opposed to the radial influence exuded by megacap companies on their platforms. However, the federated internet is just an ideological fantasy. Even with current federated communities, e.g., mastodon, we see strong clustering of ideologies through federations blocking and associating with each other. Fundamentally this is no different from web 1.0 websites choosing who to out link to either way, or what web rings "modern" web 1.0 sites choose to join. In a true decentralized/federated environment, humans will gravitate into clusters and form groupthink. Human behaviour always devolves to tribalism at some point or another, you can either accept that we are all dead or believe everyone else is an NPC.+2

@Droggelbecherbot - 2025-06-09 11:22:03

I do think it's possible to use the internet and put oneself out there on these social media sites AND maintain an authentic personality, but it requires two things: 1) extraordinary discipline and resistance to the temptation of chasing dopamine 2) a clearly defined goal WHY you're spending your time on these sites in the first place, for example making an impact on the world or other people+1

@bucephalusstudios - 2025-06-06 11:22:03

It's a little hard to follow, but what I'm hearing from you is that we have unknowingly sacrificed our individuality to conform en masse to the culture of big tech websites. People are just repeating the same things from one another so now real people are sounding AI generated. From where I come from, which is game development Youtube, this is true. Game development Youtubers tend to echo the same advice and opinions, but I think that's because the type of person to become a game developer is going to first seek their education here, as it's where all of the major conference talks are hosted, they usually don't have enough experienced to get hired and learn on the job, and few boomer parents are going to want to pony up the cash to send their child to a 4-year game development college degree. I'm trying to be a unique and non-AI generated voice on game dev Youtube, but I acknowledge that I am probably a product of my environment. I've been trying to read books and have more in-person conversations, and I think that's helped a lot :)+1

@bucephalusstudios - 2025-06-07 11:22:05

 @0xAA55  For sure! I did that myself. I've seen quite a few of my peers in the industry jump in and broke under the pressure of the amount they had to learn, or just consigned themselves to QA jobs instead of jobs where they could gain more important skills.+1
