If anything that I’ve ever said has offended you, I hope you forgive me, because that was never my intention. Um, I think I want to talk about a habit that everyone has, right? I can see it in myself, and I can much easier see it in other people, because it’s always easier to see faults in others. But, you know, there’s a habit we have where, when we are subject to correction—not even correction, let’s say another recommendation or another kind of insult that leads us to something that we don’t do—there’s a tendency, it’s very, very strong nowadays, to be insulted by it, to be offended by it, to resist it.
We resist it not really because it’s not good advice. In fact, usually, we’re most offended by the stuff that is the best advice. But we are offended by it because we want to—well, I think really what it is, you’re lazy. You want to interpret it as a personal assault. You want to psychoanalyze the person who said it. You want to say, “Oh, you just think this. You don’t want me to do this because it makes you feel better than me,” blah, blah, blah, all this kind of stuff. Right? Now, that’s a reaction that all of us have. You know, I have it, you probably have it, you might be perfect, I don’t know.
But, I mean, just a little ad: it’s a sad thing to have nowadays, because the modern world is rife with habits that destroy you. They’re rife with tendencies, whether it’s a dietary tendency, a personal habit, or some way of looking at the world. All of these habits that the modern world instills in you are nearly all deleterious; they’re nearly all bad. I mean, and not even—I shouldn’t even say habits, really—just the paths of least resistance. You know, I mean, random example: I think pretty much everyone who knows what’s going on, for example, will tell you that one of the things out there that’s bad for you is polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), right? You know, bad for your heart, bad for basically everything; they inflame you, etc., etc. You can look it up as you will.
But, you know, this is a good example because it’s a thing that’s basically in all processed food and many other non-processed foods. People might be used to making stuff with PUFAs, and they’re not any better for it; they’re a lot worse. But if you tell someone about it, I think there’s a tendency—a very natural tendency—to kind of resist that information. Because you realize, if I integrate this information and if I admit that it’s true, then that requires a lot of changes. And even more than that, I have to basically say that I’ve always been wrong. You know, even if it wasn’t my fault, even if I was just going with what other people do.
You know, it’s a pretty good example where it’s a very mundane thing, and it’s actually relatively easy to change, but it still kind of offends us, right? And that, I think, is the state of the modern man. You know, the kind of man who just wants to live his life. He’s very much in a position where nearly everything he does is unhealthy for him. You know, and I’m not just talking about health—like PUFAs or having everything in plastics, obviously that’s bad for you and stuff like that. But, you know, I’m really talking about everything.
Like, when I’m on my channel, if I say any kind of technology recommendation, like, “Oh, you shouldn’t use this browser,” you know, “Oh, you shouldn’t use this non-free software,” you shouldn’t blah, blah, blah. I think a lot of people who are emotionally invested in what they’re already doing, you know, they want to resist it. They want to say, “Oh, you’re just making that up. Oh, you’re just being a purist. Oh, you’re just being blah, blah, blah. You’re making up a blah, blah, blah.”
And again, it’s important to realize, firstly, when it comes to me and when I’m interacting with someone on the internet, dude, I don’t look at you any way higher or lower. I don’t know who you are. You know, that’s just kind of how it is. You know, I’m saying this kind of stuff because I don’t have much of a stake in the game, other than, you know, I want people to do stuff that’s good. But, you know, a lot of people get offended with things they shouldn’t.
And again, I’m not necessarily preaching to you because you deserve it, but again, it’s true of me; it’s true of basically every human. You know, it’s kind of unfortunate. We gain emotional connections to the things that destroy us, you know, whether it’s an unhealthy habit, a kind of degenerate habit, all this kind of stuff. This is stuff that if we don’t correct, you know, we’re just going to get further and further into it.
You know, and so you should look at correction; you should look at, I don’t know, someone even chiding you in a bully-ish way. You know, you should look at that as almost like a—I mean, you should look at it as a good thing. You know, even if someone is being irrational and saying you’re stupid or whatever, there might be—I think there’s a little bit of truth in even the most offensive comments and the most offensive things that people might say to you. Obviously, they have them for a reason, and they might be mostly unjustified.
But, you know, that’s just something to think about. So, you know, your ego is your biggest problem. Well, my ego is my biggest problem; I’m just saying the general “you.” And that’s just something to think about. But anyway, I like how it looks today, but I would just like—what if I just filmed myself standing, you know, for a while? Maybe I’ll do that in a video someday. But see you next time!

The only thing I miss from native linux is the more comprehensive package management, specifically AUR, and fast terminals. tmux in mintty is SLOWWWW and in wezterm/WindowsTerminal even slowerrrrr it's actually insane. Nothing to do with capitalism. It was always hard for people to change their ways. Blaming capitalism, that doesn't force to consume or a behavior on people, is a bit cheap. Many people resist change of diet also because in the last decades dozens of information about a health or unhealthy diet were lies. Eggs bad, fried food = cancer, red meat bad, red wine good for the heart: All these myths started with sloppy studies and echoed through media.. Sorry for the rant :D+26

Real. You don't like my favorite soyware? Well my whole identity is built upon my kool loonix rice so this is an attack on my core identity. In an economic context, "consumers consume" refers to the process where individuals or households purchase and use goods and services to fulfill their needs and desires. This process is a fundamental part of economic systems, as it drives demand for products and services, ultimately influencing production and overall economic activity. Our economic system is built on your demise. We are constantly being replaced by other consumers. By the time you figure out what’s going on, it’s too late and your time here has reached the end.+12

As a person for whom this is an unfamiliar feeling, this might definitely be caused by one's ego dependance on something unnecessary or external. The coolest thing you could do - is to constantly admit your previous mistakes and evolve. By having this strategy, you embrace each revelation about each of your mistakes. And your swag isn't based on your set of opinions at any given moment of time, but rather on your overall attitude. Thus nothing's ever offensive.+1

Counter reactive conversational responses that side step any offensive or overly defensive patterns in someone's conversational tone or an erratic or otherwise interruptive back and forth, due to someone not being able to level with your approach is the worst disease of the modern world, that people can't seem to learn their way out of. Or they are otherwise too ego driven to have integrity and balance in their outlook on their social contracts. Some people who start sensing power imbalances in the short or long term, start developing weird tactics to bypass conversationally healthy habits, that should remain the fundamental cornerstones of communication. Luke Smith's communicative style is welcoming (even with the digital barrier in-between), as it touches on common issues with unconventional intensity and immersion. You being able come back around to address any undealt idiosyncratic or intimately felt intolerance is a very good way to have the best of both worlds in teaching your way of mind. The issues i describe are not as bad when they happen over text, as text is not the ideal, nor correct way to converse, but they're definitely destructive or hurtful in real-life. EDIT: so, basically common ground is good, but where do you find common ground in our modern, splintered world full of unconventional personalities, and egos?+1

I wouldn't say that ego is "your" problem. It is a mechanism, sometimes correct sometimes wrong but it is there to protect you. I think people get offended when they get mean comments without a good reason. A lot of times criticism is made just to make you feel bad and of course there is no better criticism when it holds some little (or perceived) truth. It triggers people with unprocessed emotions even more. Recognizing and accepting your bad parts and shortcomings will help shied you against such criticism.+1

@RA9U1 - 2025-06-13 10:52:54
Like what a another commenter said, olive oil is mostly mono-unsaturated. However, unless the olive oil comes from a reputable source and/or you know the producer/manufacturer and/or it comes from a single-source bottler with labels & dates, there's no guarantee that the bottler didn't add loads of seed oils which are polyunsaturated. It's actually been proven through spectrometric testing, that blenders can make oil mixes, using a greater percentage of seed oils, with some olive oil & flavoring agents, and successfully pass it off as 100% pure olive oil to professional taste testers. Never trust just your taste, use your brain and get 100% olive oil, so that you're not consuming polyunsaturated fats & Omega-6's.+1

I'm offended by corporations calling me a 'consumer'. How dare you, that's a highly offensive slur, I identify as a discerning customer, not a slop ingesting garbage disposal. It really offends me when you try to piss on me and tell me it's raining too. TLDR: I hate bullshit. You should too. If a corporation or government calls you a consumer, the faceless multinational for-profit entity 'identifies' with and 'relates' to you, then you should be offended. The rest of it? I let it slide, someone calling you names like this is kindergarten says more about them than what these dullards are trying to say about you as they spastically hurl epithets in a rage. Anger is a gift when guided by logic, but y'all want to shoot the messenger instead of behead the King for writing the unjust Royal Decree. 2:40 Not sure. I don't think I'm easily offended by anything. If you tell me that something is bad, I usually somewhat agree to it. Maybe I might have a different view or know that it's not that bad if you use it sprasingly. But I usually agree on the general things, especially if they are well known. Especially when it's about physical health, I'd likely agree about the facts. When it's about other things, I might argue about morality or that things are subjective. In the end it's also subjective if you prefer a long and healthy life over short term fun, but most people probably would agree that having a long and healthy life is a good thing, maybe not if they are depressive.+1

It's such a twisted thing today that people just get offended, even by slight things, and then shutdown. We've been programmed to be this way with postmodern egoism. It's especially bad in churches, where an unrealistic and toxic standard is held up that "if you offend somebody YOU'RE IN THE WRONG! THOU SHALT NOT OFFEND!" The Bible is one of the most offensive books ever written but few understand the contents of it, instead we sanitize and put a happy face and see that as the ultimate good and virtue as opposed to the biblical value of TRUTH! People need to be offended when they're on the highway to hell.+3

Polyunsaturated fats oxidize faster, and are therefore unstable. The theory is that they can cause the formation of free radicals in the body. Its generally a good practice to avoid ultraproccessed foods, regardless if its the soybean oil causing the harm.+9
@lowerpower2528 - 2025-06-13 10:52:58

@ArilandoArilando - 2025-06-13 10:52:58
@CIB8282 Ultra-processed foods are typically bad because: 1. They are calorie dense without satiating hunger, easily leading to overeating 2. They contain additional ingredients (especially the numbered ingredients) that we don't know the long-term health effects of. At least some of those ingredients are probably harmful. It doesn't have anything to do with polyunsaturated fatty acids.+4

@ArilandoArilando Unless you are consuming cold-pressed seed oils, and ensure that they remain under their polymerization temperature threshold during processing & up to point of consumption, you will be eating plastics. Sure, they're not plastics derived from fossil hydrocarbons, but where do you think the term "linoleum" came from? So, sure, seed oils in and of themselves are not harmful, but if you're not eating them right, it's like how almonds in and of themselves are not harmful, but if you eat improperly processed ones or too many of the bitter kind, you can be poisoned with cyanide. It also depends on dosages. The dosages of improperly handled & incorporated seed oils has lead to the problems we see today.+1

@atheopagan He doesn't trust institutional science and he doesn't seriously believe in the NPC meme, out of all the memes he uses the NPC meme is one of the few exceptions where he treats it as a joke and nothing more. I would elaborate on the science thing but it would take too long, i'll give you some pointers if you're curious: His site has several essays on the topic, a couple videos he touches on the topic and there's a podcast episode he made specifically about how institutional science is misguided.+2

Offense is a valid response in those situations. If racism did not offend you then that'd be weirder imo. Issue is we're all trained to take offense at anything, it generates clicks. Look at all the nothing burgers that end up exploding, whether it be from the liberals in the form of some edgy joke not received well, or god forbid "cultural appropriation" or it be from the conservative gamers mad about "happy holidays" or a video game character not being hot... the victimhood narrative is great for making people consume countless hours of outrage porn.+4

Is it a criticism of daffodils to say they don't live as well as hostas when they're planted next to a black walnut tree? If that's not a criticism of daffodils, is it a criticism to say that one race performs better in a particular environment than another race? Are these merely observations of generalized phenomena, or is it inherently morally slanted regardless of the objective? I think the race question is a valid topic, and should be properly pursued, instead of allowing it to fester with grifters and ideological dogs like how Liberalism has allowed for the past 200 years.+1

@sukkeri - 2025-06-13 10:53:01
no. any fat fed to mice in large amounts like that will make them fat. pufa oils are calorie-dense like any other pure fats. they are still better than saturated fats because they do not raise LDL cholesterol level but actually lower it. I do avoid eating too much pure oils because of the calories but in real foods pufas are actually very healthy.+2

Or, the advice you're giving someone is not as good as you think it is. Your personal opinions on life are not objectively correct, and no one is required to entertain them. To think YOU of all people are in any position to "correct" anyone, or tell them what activities to refrain from is delusional. Cognitive dissonance does exist, but not only in the people who disagree with you. Your sense of objective reality is ultimately subjective, and it is unfair to not only hold others to your strange arbitrary standards, but expect them to personally subscribe to them. And when they don't, you portray their position in as played up and memeified of a way as possible. Normally I would advise you to talk with your spiritual father, but you're probably ROCOR lmao he'd just affirm your arrogance.+2

Maybe he realizes that people in the real world have no interest in what he says, and talking to a camera in the woods is his only outlet. It's kind of sad when you think about it. The guy who is trying to promote community, telling people to get away from the big cities, away from their computers, but here he is, alone, back on YouTube. Moreover, you were an utter right-wing caricature — an NPC, if you will — while doing it.+2
@mkd1113 - 2025-06-13 10:53:02
Polyunsaturated fats are unhealthy, and this has got nothing to do with 'right wing beliefs'. Polyunsaturated fats found in seed oils and plant oils (like linoleic acid) are highly unstable at high temperatures. When heated, they oxidize and form compounds such as aldehydes and lipid peroxides, which are highly inflammatory and induce oxidative stress. By contrast, saturated fats found in animal products like tallow, lard, or ghee are chemically stable and do not produce toxic byproducts. These animal based fats are the healthiest fats for human beings to consume.+2
@maximilianmusterhans4659 - 2025-06-13 10:53:02
Why are all warmblooded animals and plants living at high temperatures (like coconut palms) predominantly synthesizing saturated fatty acids? It's not rocket science. "The anti-saturated fat view is winning" Are you still living in the 90s?+2

@5000okok - 2025-06-13 10:53:03
Lol he's just talking about general advice. Not about his advice. The phenomenon is that in general we tend to reject some advice from others and are offended by it even if we know it's true. There is not only subjective advice, but a shared truth we and others can access and sometimes we tend to ignore it for convenience.+4
@OthorgonalOctroon - 2025-06-13 10:53:03
@voskresenie- speedrunning while pathetic is unironically more valid than prayer, yet mock the latter around here and see what happens.+1
@voskresenie- - 2025-06-13 10:53:03
@OthorgonalOctroon whether you believe prayer is interfacing with the divine or simply speaking into the void, the overwhelmirg scientific consensus is that it has immense value as a psychological tool. If you can find similar research demonstrating the positive effects of speedrunning, I'm open to hearing it, but given you brought up prayer literally out of nowhere, I suspect you're just an edgy atheist who assumes prayer is pointless because doing so allows you to feel superior to the vast majority of humans who have ever lived.+1
@OthorgonalOctroon - 2025-06-13 10:53:03
@voskresenie- video games are good for cognitive function. speedrunning is one form of video gaming without the skinner box mechanics. if you didn't know that much before making this argument then that is typical christian ignorance. on the other hand any such value attributed to prayer is actually from meditation. and even in your theology prayer is pointless because god knows what you want before you ask, he just puts you through the chore anyway because incoherent reasons usually involving schizophrenia and/or some parasocial "relationship". you could just be meditating to yourself as some atheists do and it would make no difference to your god, this is even how many's assurance of salvation works.+1
@voskresenie- - 2025-06-14 10:53:03
@OthorgonalOctroon 1. video games are not good for cognitive function. they literally fry your brain. They do have minor benefits relating to motor control, but motor control is not a major deficiency affecting quality of life for most people. 2. even if the positive effects of prayer were the same as the positive effects of meditation, that would be irrelevant, by your own logic — otherwise, I could say 'nah speedrunning doesn't have any benefits you couldn't get playing an instrument'. Just because you could, theoretically, get similar benefits from other activities doesn't mean the activity doesn't have benefits. Most of the benefits of eating broccoli can also be had by eating cauliiflower, and vice versa, but that doesn't mean broccoli isn't nutritious. 3. additionally, a far greater percentage of religious people pray than non-religious people meditate, so compliance is clearly better for prayer than meditation, and compliance is one of the most important parts of any beneficial activity. 4. moreover, your claim isn't even true. Prayer has benefits that mindfulness meditation does not have. There are types of meditation that have similar benefits, but those types of meditation involve solicitation of the immaterial, which makes them more or less equivalent to prayer, and subject to the same objections you make of it. 5. I'm not Christian. I'm just an atheist who isn't a smug punk about it. 6. parents typically know what their children want before they ask for it, but they still will wait for their children to ask for it, because doing so is beneficial to the child and assists their development. it also avoids spoiling them, since they understand that the things you receive are gifts from the parents, rather than things they are entitled to by virtue of existing. prayer isn't about informing God what you want; it's about the act of solicitation. 7. there's nothing parasocial or schizophrenic or otherwise disordered about religious belief and action. It is one of the most natural things in the world, as evidenced by its ubiquity in literally every civilization to ever exist. 8. even if there were, all of those things are even more true of video games, where you pretend to be a fictional character and interact with other fictional characters as if they are real people. 9. your critiques of religion are literally tween-tier. If you spent some time actually understanding religious belief, you might be able to make more convincing arguments against it. But if you actually understood it, you might find you no longer have any desire to.+1

I like how you know very well you are contradicting yourself and frame it as the person interviewing him will benefit from the exposure instead of the interviewer does actually have an interest in what he says.+4

His YouTube career is his best accomplishment and he defaces it by promoting a quiet rural life, rotting away and talking to one's 'family.' It's such a dramatic, visible irony. He knows, deep down, that this will one of the most meaningful things he will accomplish in his life. And yet his entire worldview cannot accommodate that fact.+1
